Back To School

Another summer has come and gone and it is almost time for me to go back to school.  This summer has gone by faster than I would have liked but it for sure has been the best summer of my life.  That being said I am very excited to be going back to school now.  Most of my excitement is coming from the fact that I will be living on campus again this year after commuting last year.  Even with commuting last year it is going to be hard for this year to surpass last year do to the fact that last year I got engaged to the most amazing woman in the entire world.  That being said there are a lot of things that I am looking forward to this coming year in addition to living on campus again including working as a lab assistant for the com. dept., possibly directing EPIC, using my own meals in the D.C., and spending almost everyday with my fiance.  I also have a lot of things outside of school that I am looking forward too this year as well.  I will be sponsoring my fiance as she goes through Catholic Classes in order to be Confirmed and she and I will be going through pre-marital counseling which is exciting as well.  Now that I have blogged about it I think this coming year is going to be a heck of a lot better than last year.  The only thing I'm really not looking forward to is going to class but I'll just skip that if I don't want to go :)

My First Blog

While the title of this blog may lead you to believe that I am going to be blogging about The Lord of the Rings that is not entirely true. Yes that is what many of my blogs will be about and I will probably reference those amazing books many times in posts that were not intended to be about them. As for my first blog I am going to talk about how I came to be on the career path that I am on now, and yes, it does involve Lord of the Rings.

When I was younger I did not know what I wanted to do when I grew up. I wanted to be everything from a farmer to a monster truck driver to a marine biologist and everything in between. When I entered middle school a movie called The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released into theaters. Seeing the previews for this film it did not seem like the type of movie that I would enjoy so I decided that I was not going to bother and go see it. One week in December my aunt, uncle, and cousins came up from Ohio for a visit. My uncle decided that he wanted to go and see The Lord of the Rings and offered to take anyone who wanted to come with him. I decided to tag along for the sole reason of seeing a movie with my uncle. That day changed my life forever.

After watching that movie I immediately fell in love with Lord of the Rings. I could not stop talking about the movie. Everything about it was amazing to me. It was then that I decided that I wanted to pursue a career as a film maker. Being an extremely competitive individual I wanted to pursue this career in order to make a movie that was better than Lord of the Rings. After watching the first movie I decided that I would read the books to find out how the story ended. I never really liked reading when I was younger but I did enjoy these books. I was a little disappointed with the second and third movies because of the differences from the books, but I did not think much of it at that point because I was a movie man at that point in my life. I went through high school wanting to be a film maker for the most part (I had a brief period of time where I wanted to be a tennis coach but that was short lived and I returned to film making) and when I went to college, film making was my plan.

When I first came into Spring Arbor two years ago I was a Video/Film major with a Youth Ministry minor with dreams of one day becoming a Hollywood director. I was one of those students that thought that they would never change their major because I thought I knew what I was going to be. I was wrong. For my J-term class I took my gen. ed. world literature class. This class changed my entire career path. Up until this point I had hated all of my literature classes because I thought all of the books we had to read were boring and stupid. The only class I took in high school that wasn't bad was my senior lit. comp. class where we read older works. In my world literature class that trend continued when we had to read a lot of classical and medieval works. In those three short weeks I fell in love with literature. It was at this point that I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in literature.

It was then that I decided to change my major to English Literature and make Video/Film my minor. After getting my bachelor's degree I hope to one day go to grad school and get my master's and eventually my doctorate and hopefully one day be a college literature professor. I had always loved the Lord of the Rings books ever since I read them. Through the years I read and re-read them and found something new each and every time. When I found out that I could have a career that I could incorporate my love for Lord of the Rings I was ecstatic. The career path that I am on right now is a dream come true and I hope to continue living that dream for a long time and one day teach Lord of the Rings as a college course.
